A very architectural and beautiful evergreen plant with symmetrical rosettes of stiff, dark green, shiny fronds up to 1.5 meters in length that are a little bit pointy at the ends. These rise from a slightly shaggy, swollen bulbous caudex which over time forms a palm like trunk. On mature plants the trunks can be up to 7 meters high but due to the slow growth rate it takes many years to reach that height. This is one of the cycads that is used to make sago, a starchy substance consumed in many tropical countries. The high starch content makes young plants an attractive nibble for some pets, dogs especially, but is actually poisonous in it's unrefined state so keep away from animals. Saying that our dog has never touched them and he is a Labrador so pretty much eats anything. If any of the ancient cycad group is going to prove hardy then it is this one. Given a humus rich, well drained soil and planted in a sheltered spot they are proving to be quite cold tolerant with our plant at home being in it's 3rd winter outside. It has survived several days at -7c with no more protection than a ball of straw placed on the crown and then the fronds pulled up and tied in to keep the straw in place. The outer fronds tend to yellow at the tips but can be removed in late spring once the last frosts have passed. Sent as young plant in a 12cm pot. Approx heights above pot 30 to 35cm.
