This beautiful vine is ideally suited to a hanging basket or heavy based pot in the home or heated conservatory trailing over the edges with waxy, curled, twisted foliage. It is the twisted trailing foliage that has given this cultivar the name Rasta referring to it's reminiscence of dreadlocks. The foliage is dark green on top and a much lighter green beneath contrasting well with the bright red flowers that emerge from a dark maroon calyx. Heaviest flowering is usually in late Summer and early Autumn but they can appear at any time on and off throughout the year. Many people struggle with growing this plant but by following a few simple rules it is in fact generally quite easy. Plant in a free draining, humus rich compost. We have found a 3 part peat/ coir, 1 part perlite and 1 part fine bark chippings works well. Keep the compost slightly moist at all times preferably with rain water. Do not overwater as that can cause the roots to rot. Mist spray regularly with rainwater, tap water (especially in hard water areas) will leave white marks on the waxy leaves once dried. Feed once a month with a balanced fertiliser from April through to the end of September and keep in a bright position but out of direct sunlight. Winter temperatures must not fall below 10c. Just one more thing, it is a very brittle plant so position in a spot where it will not be regularly knocked or brushed past. If it does take a hit and some stems get knocked off do not worry, just take the broken stem, allow it to dry for a day or two so the break calluses over and then push it back in the pot. Usually it will re-root quickly. This also applies to any damages during shipping. Sent as a young plant in a 9cm pot.
